Safety is top priority for Roselyn Coaches and this was the primary reason for participating in Department of Transport SAFED programme for the Bus and Coach industry.
Roselyn Coaches is already a JAUPT approved training centre and, therefore, an additional benefit of undertaking the SAFED instruction was the opportunity to add a Driver Certificate of Professional Competency compliant module to our list of approved courses.
Roselyn’s Training Manager and SAFED Instructor, Andrew Stillwell-Cox, then tutored 20 company drivers during December 2009 and January 2010. Following training, the drivers achieved an average improvement of 11.4% in MPG; they also attained a 23% reduction in gear changes and a very impressive 50% reduction in driving faults. Feedback from drivers was very positive; with all participants stating that the SAFED course was well organised and informative.
Fuel expended by SAFED trained drivers was tracked for a month after tuition so as to establish reliable data for the impact of the programme. The results demonstrated an 11% reduction in fuel use.
A yearly refresher course is planned for the benefit of all company drivers and to underpin Roselyn’s continued commitment to safe and fuel efficient driving. Roselyn also offers the SAFED course on a commercial basis to other companies in the South West.
